맛집메이니어는 영어로 Masjib Mania라고 불러요. 보통 영어로는 ’ㅅ’이 S로 쓰이는데 ‘ㅅ’이 받침이라면 T를 써요. ‘맛’이 영어로 Mat이라고 쓰이는데, 이 블로그의 이름은 말장난이에요. 이 블로그의 이름에서는 S가 ‘ㅅ’으로 불려요.

Mania는 한국어로 보통 ‘메니아’나 ‘마니아’라고 써요. 하지만 어렸을 때 제가 애니메이션을 많이 보던 루니투운스에서 온 태즈메이니안 데빌을 좋아했어요. 태즈메이니안 데빌은 저처럼 항상 배가 고파서 제가 음식에 대한 블로그의 이름을 만들었어요. 하지만, 발음은 ‘메이니어’가 ‘메이니아’보다 mania와 더 비슷해요.

저는 지금 서울에서 살아도 미국에서 태어났고 자랐어요. 한국어를 배운지 4년 됐는데 자주 공부해요.

Some people might romanize the Korean name of this website (맛집) as “matjib”, which might make more sense to some English speakers. However, as a nod to its Korean roots, I romanized it as “masjib” instead of more conventional variations.

In Korean, a masjib (맛집) is a “tasty restaurant.” The first syllable, mas (맛) is pronounced “mot” (rhymes with “dot”) and means “flavor.” If something tastes good, you would say that it has “mas.”

The second syllable, jib (집) is pronounced “jip” (rhymes with “bib”) and means “house.” In Korean, “house” is often used to designate certain types of buildings. For example, sul (술) means “alcohol”, so a suljib (술집) is a “bar.”

Korean is a language with a phonetic alphabet. The letter ㅅ usually has a sound similar to the English letter “s.” If a letter is used at the bottom of a character, it is known as a badchim (받침). When ㅅ is a badchim, it turns into “t” sound, not an “s” sound.
