Many children all around the world find trains to be interesting without parallel. When I was younger, I was far from an exception. Something about the size, power, and efficiency of trains always fascinated me. As a result, the train-themed restaurant Pizzaworks in Old Saybrook was always a favorite stop for me as a child. I returned on December 28 to see how it was doing.
Pizzaworks’ train theme is hardly a coincidence; it is located in the plaza of the historic Old Saybrook train station, and is right on the tracks. If you are in Old Saybrook waiting for a train, Pizzaworks is a convenient way to both fill your belly and pass the time. Weather permitting, outside seating is also available.
My significant other, Ms. R, and I stopped by for a light lunch. While we were concerned that we would have to purchase an entire pizza, we were pleasantly surprised by the availability of individual slices. We ordered one slice of cheese pizza and one slice of pepperoni. For a light dessert, we ordered one slide of peanut butter pie.
Being perfectly honest, for me the chief attraction of Pizzaworks comes from its intricate model train displays. On the second story of the restaurant, there are two glassed-off sections with excellent miniature train tracks, props, and buildings intersperse with items of local memorabilia. A single track also connects the two models, with a train that traverses the distance. Had our food not arrived, I could have spent much longer observing it.
Both of the two slices of pizza were gigantic! In fact, they were so huge that they had gone ahead and cut each slice in half for us. For the price of one slice, we had effectively received two slices–what a deal! The pizza itself was cooked in a traditional New Haven style. The peanut butter pie was delectable as well, rich in flavor, although perhaps a bit too sugary.
Pizzaworks is an adorable pizza joint for the whole family. While its pizza does not meet the same quality as Alforno’s, it is not half bad. The lunch special is really a steal, and I will be coming back. To be frank, come for the trains, stay for the pizza!
