It is hard to believe that, until today, I have not covered any seafood on Masjib Mania. Yes, I know that I reviewed the white clam pizza from Pepe’s in New Haven, but I was really referring to dedicated seafood restaurants. Living on the Connecticut shoreline means that there are more restaurants serving fresh seafood than I can even keep straight. To celebrate my parents’ anniversary, we visited Liv’s Oyster Bar in Old Saybrook on September 7.
We were hungry when we arrived, so we ordered as soon as possible. For starters, my mother chose the Fried Calamari Salad, a dish incorporating baby arugula, shaved fennel, fried lemon, and creamy vinaigrette with fried squid. I went with crispy pork and shrimp dumplings with kimchi and soy citrus glaze, and my father ordered half a dozen of raw clams.
Thankfully, we did not have to wait too long for the appetizers to come out from the kitchen. My dad remarked how fresh and satisfying the raw clams were, and my mom quite enjoyed her calamari salad. The dumplings were out of this world. I was a little skeptical of ordering dumplings with kimchi from a non-Korean restaurant, but they pulled off the dish exceptionally.
For the main dish, my father ordered one of the day’s specials: the pan seared tilefish, served with potato gnocchetti, Maitake mushrooms, red veined sorrel, roasted garlic, lemon, and parsley sauce. My mother ordered a pan seared sea bass, and I went with a classic: a New England lobster roll with Old Bay seasoned fries.
When the food arrived, my mother immediately exclaimed how she liked the color of her dish. My father also enjoyed his meal, commenting that “nothing beats well-prepared fresh sea food.” My lobster roll was a testament to that fact. Lobster was filled to the brim of the roll, all smothered in the most luscious of buttery sauces. I barely had room for the delectable Old Bay french fries!
Liv’s is one of the shoreline’s higher-end seafood restaurants. While I would not recommend bringing children to the restaurant, it is a perfect location for adults to enjoy a good meal to eat. In the summertime, Liv’s also runs a smaller establishment serving more causal, less expensive fare called Liv’s Clam Shack. We had a great evening at Liv’s Oyster Bar, and will be returning for some of the $1 oyster nights.
