The white clam pizza at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, Connecticut is ranked the best pizza in the United States. Actress Meryl Streep, President Bill Clinton, actor Robert De Niro, and singer Kelly Clarkson have all eaten at Pepe’s. On December 28, I returned to Pepe’s for dinner with four friends.
Connecticut has a world-famous type of pizza known as “New Haven style”. People from Connecticut often call this “apizza”. The crust is thin and sometimes slightly charred. Usually, they are cooked in brick ovens using coal fires. They are usually oval-shaped, not circular. Connecticut is the only whole state in the “pizza belt”, a food theory of where to find the best pizza in the United States.
After waiting in line for 45 minutes, we sat down in the restaurant. My friends Mr. K, Ms. M, and I wanted the infamous white clam pizza. Mr. C and Mr. Z wanted to get a sausage, red pepper, and mozzarella pizza. We ordered both!
Some of my friends ordered beer, but I had birch beer soda. This is a special carbonated, non-alcoholic drink made in the northeastern United States and in Newfoundland, Canada. This soda is made from the sap from the bark of a birch tree. It looks like Sprite or Chilsung Cider, but it tastes similar to root beer soda, a popular drink in the United States.
Both pizzas were excellent. The white clam pizza was creamy and pleasantly salty; the charred crust provides a nice contrast in taste. The sausage, red pepper, and mozzarella pizza provided a nice diversity in tastes. My only complaint was that the pizzas were very greasy.
If you go at lunch or dinner, there will be a lot of people. The restaurant can be very loud, but the pizza is excellent. If you go to New Haven, you must go to Pepe’s. No excuses!
