Sugar de Chou, Hapjung

While dessert cafés are a dime a dozen in Seoul, I always appreciate ones with homemade goodies and relaxing atmospheres. Right after eating dinner at the previously-reviewed Ddalgigol with a friend, we sought somewhere to satisfy our collective sweet tooth. On a warm evening on April 24, we tried Sugar de Chou in Hapjung.

When I first visited Korea, Hongdae was the go-to place for hip clubs, indie music performances, and unique food experiences. When I returned to Seoul, I found that it had been significantly commercialized. On the plus side, it is now a lot more tourist friendly. On the down side, many were concerned that it was losing its indie flair.

While Hongdae still has a lot of good food options, I’ve recently found myself heading to Hapjung more frequently. The Sugar de Chou dessert café is located roughly between the Hapjung (합정역) and Sangsu (상수역) subway stations, in the center of Hapjung proper.

My friend, Mr. H, and I both ordered the same item – the real double chocolate cupcake. After ordering, it only took a few minutes before the barista served us our food. It is chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Shaved almonds topped both of the cupcakes. The cake was not dry and the frosting tasted richly chocolatey.

Sugar de Chou is a cute little dessert café in Hapjung. It is perfect for a low-key date night dessert. The coffee and tea menu also had a number of items to choose from. Due to the cozy interior, I wouldn’t mind returning here in the future to do some studying – or perhaps some blogging!

Name (Korean): 슈가드슈
Name (Official English):
Sugar de Chou
Name (Romanized):
Sugar de Chou
Name (Translated):
The name is French, but according to my friend Ms. B, the name does not makes sense. “Chou” means either cabbage or is a nickname given to children. “Sugar of Cabbage” might be a joke about kimchi, which is made from cabbage. It was also suggested by my friend Mr. J, this might be a reference to Choux pastry, although the name would still make little sense.
