Café El Dia, Yangpyeong-dong

Due to the fact that I live in Dangsan, there are three great parks that are easily accessible: Hangang River Park, Saetgang Ecological Park, and Seonyudo Park. It goes without saying that the Seonyudo Park, which sits on an island in the Han River, is gorgeous. But, many people might not know that the Seonyudo Station area is really quaint. On a sunny Sunday afternoon in late spring, my significant other and I stumbled upon the area in search of donuts. We returned on June 15 to try El Dia for dinner.

The area between Seonyudo Park and the Seonyudo subway station is filled with cafés galore. However, if you want to eat dinner in the area, there are some pretty slim pickings to choose from. In my opinion, this area is best enjoyed in the afternoon.

In Seoul, a lot of cafés offer food, but most of that time that just entails a few dainty sandwiches. However, at El Dia, there is a respectable food menu. The name “El Dia” is Spanish and the restaurant’s main offering is tapas. Nevertheless, my significant other, Ms. R, and I were looking to eat an actual dinner.

Ms. R ordered the “scoopable pizza” (떠먹는 피자), which was handmade pizza with sweet potato, bacon, salad, and aioli sauce. She liked the pizza, but she said that it did not fill her up. The pizza was almost too sweet, and it could have used more bacon to better contrast the flavors.

I ordered the “homemade burger” (수제버거). In the picture on the menu, the bun looked black, as it was purportedly made with black squid ink. The burger was on the tasty side, but without the black bun on it, it just tasted like an ordinary hamburger. However, the accompanying coarsely-salted fries were out of this world. Even after finishing, I wanted to order more.

El Dia is a good café and Spanish-themed restaurant. However, the prices are a bit high considering the portion sizes. If we were to return, we would definitely give the tapas a try. Regardless, if you are going on a date in Seonyudo Park, take a stop at El Dia before or after visiting the island.
