The Pizza Boyz, Hapjung

Korean pizza is a hotly debated topic amongst Western expats living in South Korea. Korean pizza usually is sprinkled with all sorts of toppings, from bulgogi beef, sweet potato paste, French fries, shrimp, to, most controversially, kernels of corn. I hail from Connecticut, home of the United States’ top ranked pizza, but I have a soft side for Korean pizza. When a friend from New York City was in town, I made sure that she tried some Korean pizza. On June 19, we tried The Pizza Boyz in Hapjung.

Ironically, this pizza restaurant is “USA-themed” with an aesthetic influenced heavily by New York City. Each pizza has a miniature American flag stuck into the middle. While we dined, the sounds of Queensbridge-raised rapper Nas’ classic 1994 album  Illmatic boomed from nearby speakers. Pictures of superhero Captain America and rap icon Tupac Shakur were also on the wall.

We ordered the Potato Pizza, which included onion fries, bacon, mozzarella, sliced onions, ranch sauce, and, of course, potatoes. The menu also included fries, wings, and a corn salad option. Beer was available, but neither of us ordered any. We were there for one reason: to have some Korean-style pizza. And we were not disappointed!

This might have been the best pizza I have ever eaten in Seoul. The cheese was copiously applied, and melted in the best of ways. The ‘za itself was salty, but not overwhelmingly so due to the contrast of flavors. The bacon and ranch went perfectly with the starch of the potatoes. After eating half of the medium pizza, I felt full until lunch of the next day. My friend, Ms. G, agreed entirely.

The service was very friendly, but the music was a bit too loud. When I tried calling a server to the table, she could not hear me over the sound of the speaker. The aesthetic itself was very pleasant and the food more than made up for the loudness. The restaurant was also incredibly clean.

I cannot recommend The Pizza Boyz highly enough. The food was excellent and I cannot wait to return. However, if you are not a fan of U.S. hip-hop or loud music, the atmosphere might be a bit annoying. To reiterate: this is the best pizza I have ever eaten in Korea. Check this place out!
