Gusto Taco is not a new restaurant, nor is it one without a plethora of other reviews. In fact, it has been so successful that it has expanded from its original location near Sangsu Staton (상수역) to a Hongdae (홍대) location and a branch in the U.S. Yongsan army base. I made the decision to cover this restaurant for one reason: Gusto Taco is one of my favorite restaurants in Seoul. On February 27, I returned with a friend for dinner.
Part of the magic of Gusto Taco is Aaron Allen, who owns the restaurant along with his wife Kwon Hye-jin. Allen not only works in the kitchen and works the cash register, but he interacts with guests. He must have an excellent memory, as he remembered me each time I visited! It was definitely a nice touch.
My friend, Ms. F, and I both ordered tacos; I chose beef, whereas she chose pork. We decided to split a side of cheese nachos, which can better be described as a nacho bowl. The tortillas are handmade every day at Gusto Taco.
When the food arrived and Ms. F took her first bite, she exclaimed, “Wanjon masitda!” (“완전 맛있다!”) which roughly translates to, “Absolutely delicious!” All of the tacos came out piping hot, and tasting amazing. The spicy flavors worked very well together. The nacho bowl was larger than expected, and a great item to share.
Gusto Taco is truly a gem. While perhaps not the most authentic restaurant one can find, its food is pretty damn delicious. Although I cannot vouch for the Hongdae or Yongsan base branch, the one in Sangsu gets my highest rating. I cannot recommend it highly enough!
