When I was in high school, there were four restaurants within walking distance: The Whistle Stop Café, Windsor 75 Diner, Giovanni’s Restaurant, and Union Street Tavern. Sadly, The Whistle Stop Café and Windsor 75 Diner both have closed down. Giovanni’s is so horrendously bad that it barely deserves a mention. I revisited The Tavern in Windsor, CT with an old high school friend on December 30.

The restaurant is built inside of a building that used to be a fire department. There are two floors, with a bar on the first floor. There is a banquet room available in the back for large gatherings. Drinking Liberally Windsor, a progressive political meetup group, meets in the banquet room once a month.

The Union Street Tavern serves standard casual American fare, so I ordered a bacon cheeseburger. My friend, Ms. L, ordered a chicken sandwich. Both took a long time to arrive at the table. The food was nothing particularly special.

When I was in high school, I did not dislike The Tavern, but I did not like it, either. The food was not bad, but it was not exceptionally good, either. The Tavern was always an average restaurant with a nice atmosphere. It is a little too expensive considering the slow service and quality of food. Unless I am in the area for Drinking Liberally Windsor, I will likely go elsewhere for nourishment.
